Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is a DARK game! Clearly, one of the game's major themes is death, but just how dark does it REALLY get? Is it possible that this game is all about Link, Nintendo's signature mascot, dealing with his own death? Today on Game Theory, we review the evidence!

@Broshi actually there's no blood relation to any of them. Look at Link from Windwaker for example, he wasn't chosen to be the Hero of Winds, he forces the goddesses to choose him. The goddesses just happen to like blonde hair and blue eyes often.

Sadly this theory has been proven false by Nintendo, but this was still one of the best theories they've ever made in my opinion.

@Jack Morris I'd like to think it could be a hallucination or type of purgatory for Link, having lived his life and died, but still full of regrets because he couldn't teach his descendants his lessons for some reason. It gives the theory validation whilst not ignoring canon.

this will always be one of my favorite theories, mainly because it was one of my first ones and seems to have SO MUCH EVIDENCE

This is one of my all time favourite game theory videos as the evidence is really interesting and very well explained. Whether you believe the theory or not I think there's a lot to think about with it and it's not entirely unplausable like people try to say. Plus this video taught me about a really important thing: The 5 stages of grief, like in detail, I had never heard of it until this video and I think it's really interesting and has surprisingly been something I could bring up repeatedly at school college and university and has given something interesting to think about. At the end of the day, it's a theory... A GAME THEORY ;)
I absolutely love the music in this video. It fits perfect with what they are talking about. Some of it legit gives me chills. Majors Mask means so so much to me. Hands down my favorite video game of all time. I have so many memories with it, really takes me back....

This theory would all be well and good except for that fact that the next game in the timeline (Twilight Princess) has made it pretty clear that the hero of Twilight is a direct descendant of the hero of time. So unless Link already had a family at the age of 10 before he "died" looking for Navi than I don't think this theory works.
Descendant doesn't need to be related by blood

Hi Matpat! I love rewatching these Zelda videos especially now in 2020. I myself have a running theory that in Twilight Princess, Links soul isn’t that of the reincarnated hero like it is in every other game because of the Hero if Time’s soul being stuck as a Stalfos. What do you think? And if that is the case, then whose soul is it that was chosen to be the Hero if Twilight? Is there actually 2 hero souls?

I think the reason it says "you've met with a terrible date haven't you?" Even the moon falls is because it takes you back to your initial conversation with the mask salesman when you go back.

I mean, to be fair, you can make a theory about the main character(s) and the world being in the purgatory out of pretty much anything, but this one's actually spooky.
Though this theory is certainly backed up and interesting, there are few holes. 1. Termina isn't exactly a separate country or described as one, Termina is an alternate world in itself aside from Hyrule. 2. The same models from OOT that are used in MM was intentional so Nintendo can produce the game quicker than creating entirely new models and postpone the game as you must remember, Nintendo was working on a 2 year deadline to release MM. 3 You also have to take into account that CHILDREN who get lost in the Lost Woods become SKULLKIDS, while ADULTS who get lost in the forest become STALFOS, furthermore on this Stalfos models in TP greatly differ from the Hero Shade model which can disconnect their association.
Great theory though
Also it does take time for children/adults to turn into stalchildren/stalfos. Evidence with the biggoron sword trading quest when the guy needed the strange potion.
The first whole is well thought out, but there are alot of strange similarities between the characters in script. Not just model.

Since when was Termina an alternate world? Also he didn’t say it was another country. He used an example for if it was another country though to explain why it didn’t make sense. So I’m not claiming to know what exactly Termina is I’m just trying to say we don’t know for sure what it is but you’re acting like you do (sorry if I sound mean or something, don’t mean to I’m just trying to make a point)

This theory gets a lot of things right. The themes were placed intentionally by the developers. But its more likely that he is grieving Navi.

I love this theory. Especially at the Twilight Princess. It actually makes me glad that Link died, because we get to see that he accepted his death, and teaches us his awesome moves in the spirit realm. Awesome. Another reason to love Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess.

You could do something similar stages of grief theory on this game called Gris. It's a beautiful game and I recommend you play it. It has puzzles, hidden lore, tragic backstory, it's a great game.

The problem with this theory is that Link couldn't have died prematurely, as only adults who get lost in the Lost Woods become stalfos. Link was a child when he died according to the theory.
One thing I noticed is that it's like link is helping these people go through these phases like he's some sort of reaper of death
I just realized, the way the Happy Masked Salesman acts also acts with loss.
- When he finds out Link didn't bring back his mask, he goes into a moment of denial.
- Immediately after, he flies into a rage, violently shaking Link.
- He tells the story of Majora's Mask, and then begs Link repeatedly to bring back his precious mask, to which Link says yes.
- While we don't really see him for the rest of the game until the end, he's probably super bummed out that his mask is gone and filled with anxiety that the Skull Kid casually is ending the world.
- When his mask is finally returned at the end of the game, he says the evil has left the mask. It sounds like he's a bit disappointed that it's just a normal mask again, but either way, he accepts the mask and moves on with his life.
This is amazing. Respect goes out to the Zelda games.
This Theory can easily be debunked! Sharp says that Link is "full of life" in this game, Nintendo confirmed that the Deku Flower broke his fall, Link had to get married so he could have kids so TP Link could exist and if Link died in the lost woods as a kid he would come back as a Skull Kid and not a Stalfoes!
the bow you get as adult link is called fairies' bow, but the one you get in MM is called heroes bow just as TP, so the hero of time must have returned to hyrule after dealing with majora (so kinda disproves the link is dead theory)

Wow, I gotta admit, you've made a strong theory in this case. It is possible that the areas in the game matching up with the model of grief is just a coincidence. However, the whole statue thing being related to those who died in the game really makes me consider this theory plausible.

but like i said if you look at them link's statue's is the only statue who had eyes/ pupils because the goron's and Zora's are just white but the deku's pretty much stays the same so maybe the goron's and zora's are soulless and dead but link is still alive

I'm surprised you never mentioned how link was constantly using the song of healing to "heal" or make people accept their fate. Also in the long run heal his own heart and make him accept his own fate to escape purgatory.
Something i was surprised you didn't mention actually... all the masks you get are indeed from the characters you know have died, but the very last mask you get in the game, the feirce deity mask, strikingly resembles link.

I love that MatPat talks to PeanutButterGamer but still communicates using visuals and edits. It's like how the Aladdin Genie changes forms or creates things to emphasize a point.
Also I love how this doesn’t work in any way with the timeline, since he has to become a hylian guard and train twilight princess link. Also, termina is probably a parallel dimension.

@Heisted He could be a different type of stalfos which Nintendo confirms is true that there are multiple stalfos, as the reaction of turning into one in the lost woods after death, when you’re blessed with the TRIFORCE could be different than just an ordinary person dying and becoming a stalfos.
He was an adult in that timeline before he was transported back as a child.
I thought that The Hero s shade was an empty moving Armor with glowing red Ice not a Stalfos

Guys, have you thought about that maybe the events of Majora's Mask doesn't take place just after Ocarina of Time? He could have died as an adult, and in purgatory, returned to the body he started his journey to find Navi in. This makes sense to me.
